A LITTLE TASTE OF PORTUGUESE CULTURE

For the first time in OPOMUN’s eighteen-year history, the conference hosted a cultural evening, adding a new and exciting element to the event. This addition aimed to showcase the rich traditions of Porto while giving delegates a chance to unwind and connect beyond the formal debates.
After a strong start to the first day, with delegates engaging in thoughtful discussions and representing their countries in committee sessions, the focus shifted to the cultural evening. It provided a perfect opportunity for participants to relax, enjoy local traditions, and get to know one another in a more informal setting. The event was held in the school’s pavilion providing a warm welcome to Porto and the OPOMUN conference. At the end of a long day, the evening offered both a break from the intense debating and an opportunity to experience a piece of our city’s rich culture.
Delegates had the opportunity to listen to the school’s staff folklore band. The musicians played a selection of traditional Portuguese music, setting the tone for a fun and relaxed atmosphere. As the music filled the room, the delegates, many of whom were experiencing Portuguese culture for the first time, were invited to join in, talking, dancing, eating and having fun. It was a light-hearted and enjoyable experience, bringing a sense of unity among the delegates, who were able to share in this cultural moment together.

Delegates also were treated to a traditional Portuguese buffet. The spread included a variety of local finger food such as bolinhos de bacalhau and the irresistible pasteis de nata. The event was a great opportunity for delegates to mingle and make connections outside of their committees. While the main focus of OPOMUN is on the serious discussions surrounding global issues, the cultural event provided a moment for delegates to engage with each other on a more personal level. Whether discussing the day’s debates or simply chatting about football, it was clear that the event helped build new friendships among the delegates, which undoubtedly enhances the conference experience.
